How to Measure a Vial for a Custom Label

Start with the actual container

The nominal vial capacity is not a label dimension. Use an empty example of the container you intend to label. Check the straight-sided section rather than measuring over the shoulder or curved base.

Measure width and height

Wrap a narrow strip of paper around the vial and mark where it meets. Measure that length for the circumference, then decide whether the label should leave a gap or overlap. Measure the usable straight-sided height. Record all dimensions in millimeters. If you use a diameter measurement, the circumference is approximately diameter multiplied by 3.1416; a physical fit check remains useful.

Check fit with a paper mock-up

Cut a paper rectangle to the proposed label dimensions. Wrap it around the vial to inspect the seam, curvature and space around the shoulder and base. Look for a layout that stays readable after wrapping. Paper demonstrates fit but does not test adhesive performance.

Test the proposed label construction

Tell your supplier the container material, labeling method and expected moisture or storage conditions. Request a material sample and test it on the intended container before approving the bulk specification. A waterproof face material alone does not establish that the adhesive is suitable for your conditions.

What to send RP Labels

Include the vial dimensions, proposed label width and height, quantity per design, artwork, variable-data needs, delivery country and preferred date. A clear photograph of the container with a ruler can help explain the measurement. We supply custom printed labels, not vial contents.

Example: calculate a starting label width

For an illustrative vial with a measured diameter of 16 mm, circumference is approximately 16 × 3.1416 = 50.3 mm. A 2 mm seam gap would give a starting label width of about 48.3 mm. This is a calculation example, not a standard label size; measure and test your own container, including its usable height.

Use this measurement when planning custom peptide vial labels. Compare label materials and adhesives, then follow the proof and sample approval process.
